About the Topic

In for-profit strategic planning, an organization generally asks the question “Who are our customers and what do they expect from us?”  In mission driven strategic planning, an organization asks, “How can we influence our customers’ behavior to move toward a desired outcome?”  Both questions are relevant to all organizations.  However, in public sector and not-for-profit, organizations, which often have responsibility for distal social or health outcomes, the “distance” between organization actions and accountable outcomes may be significant, often requiring the participation and joint action of partner organizations and audiences.
Logic Models are visual tools traditionally used in public sector program planning and evaluation.  They focus not only on the relationships among objectives, as do Strategy Maps*, but also on the actual “strategies,” activities or programs to be implemented, the intended short-, mid- and long-term objectives, and the underlying “program logic” that explains the relationship between activities and outcomes.  Together, Strategy Maps and Logic Models provide a more complete picture of the “what”, the “so what”, and the “how” of an organization’s strategy in a visual format that will facilitate the communication of desired or required change.
This interactive presentation will introduce participants to this form of visual strategic modeling, present some case examples of Logic Models in action, and discuss how they can be effectively used by any organization to plan, evaluate, and communicate an organization’s strategy.  Participants will explore the ways in which modeling can assist them in developing strategic activities that will have the strongest, most direct and plausible causal relationship to their desired strategic results.
